Computer Security Tips

May 28, 12:50 AM by Jonathan Camenisch

A few weeks ago I found out about something that I’ve been wanting to pass on to all my non-techie friends and acquaintances. I wanted to send out an e-mail, but I’ve given up on figuring out who to send it to. So to the blog it is. Here’s the scoop.

The SANS Institute (a really big, famous organization that specializes in computer security issues) has started a newsletter for laypeople. It’s called OUCH, and if you own a computer personally, but you’re not highly savvy in the ways of spyware, viruses, and hackers, you should really sign up for it.

Now if the only computers you use are at work where your I.T. department is covering your back, don’t worry about it. It’s their problem. But if you’re the one responsible for the well-being of your computer and all the information on there, you really need to have a clue. To that end, I recommend OUCH.

You may not read the whole thing every time, and you may not understand everything in there. But the more of it you read, the more of an idea you’ll get about what you need to do to protect your computer. You’ll find that it’s not rocket science; it just takes a certain kind of common sense (that may not seem common to you yet). Some basic information will help take the mystery out of it.

Oh, and if you don’t understand anything in the newsletter, feel free to e-mail me your questions (or contact one of your other techie friends).

  1. Hey thanks, this is good. I am going to subscribe and start telling others about it.
