Computers and Creativity

Dec 20, 05:46 PM by Jonathan Camenisch

I just listened to an interview that I found incredibly interesting. In fact, I recommend it to anyone who has the time, but it does get into some techno-jargon pretty quickly.

So let me summarize the main thing that struck me. It helped me give shape to a thought that’s concerned me for a while. Matt MacLaurin described how he sees his little daughter developing a very different view of the computer than what he developed as a child. She sees it (he infers) as basically a television with some interactivity and lots and lots of channels, whereas he was introduced to the computer as a blank slate upon which he could express ideas.

Let me oversimplify that a bit: some people see the computer as a painting; others see it as a canvas. Which of these expectations you have makes all the difference in the world in how you will make use of the tools at your disposal.

Now if I could just figure out how to change your mindset. ;-)

  1. Ah, but my mind is not a blank slate for you to paint on. =P

  2. I can vouch for that one. :-)
